Red Hat gives enterprise Linux a major boost
>
Red Hat will launch the beta of the latest version of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) platform, referred to as milestones 8.7 and 9.1.
Both RHEL 8.7 and 9.1 add new features and capabilities designed to help organizations use their Podman containers more effectively.
Podman is an open source tool for developing, managing and running containers on Linux systems, developed by Red Hat engineers alongside the open source community. Podman allows users to manage their container ecosystem using the libpod library.
What can users also look forward to?
Enterprise users can now monitor and monitor Podman containers for health and availability by using the RHEL web console for system configuration and management.
The web console now also apparently lists CPU and memory usage for Podman containers, potentially providing better visibility for business users.
Eric Hendricks, operations advocate, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat, told: VentureBeat that “Podman is almost on par” with its main competitor Docker.
In addition, Hendricks told: VentureBeat that another key feature that sets Podman apart is “the ability to export markup code for importing a container configuration into Kubernetes systems”.
Enhanced security capabilities could be at stake for red hat users.
Hendriks told VentureBeat: “With 9.1 beta, administrators can now validate that the boot environment of a remote system has not been tampered with,”
He added, “This includes confirmation that the expected kernel and associated modules are being called instead of a compromised boot image.”
This remote attestation capability is allegedly based on the open-source Keylime.
The director also said that, “RHEL 9.1 also provides better support for multilevel security (MLS), an essential requirement in some government agencies.”
He added: “MLS can be used to classify different components based on the level of secrecy and privacy required.”
IBM bought RedHat for $34 billion in 2018, in what was the largest software acquisition of all time at the time, and it has been operating as a subsidiary ever since.
The container market is one where Red Hat is doing extremely well, as according to a recent IHS Markit report, it had a 44% share of container software market revenue in the first quarter of 2022.
Docker came in second with 23% market share, with Pivotal and VMware in third with 6%.
