Antonio Conte launched a furious attack on VAR after Tottenham were denied a last breath winner in a chaotic final to put their Champions League hopes on the line.

The Italian, who was sent off during crazy scenes, was furious when Harry Kane’s attempt was ruled out by VAR in the 95th minute for an offside penalty.

The decision sparked frantic scenes on the sidelines as Tottenham reacted angrily when they saw their winner rejected.

Conte is now banned from next week’s crucial group stage match in Marseille, where a defeat would leave Tottenham vulnerable to elimination.

And after the game, Conte couldn’t hide his anger when he attacked UEFA, which accused officials of dishonesty in comments that could result in disciplinary action.

The Spurs boss said: “The ball was in front of Kane and the goal is a goal. I don’t understand the VAR, the line they’re putting out.

“It is very difficult to comment on this decision, the VAR is doing a lot of damage. We have to accept.

The Italian was disgusted by VAR’s intervention, saying it is very ‘harmful’ to the game

“I want to see if in another stadium of a big team they are willing to disapprove of goals like this.

‘I feel a lot of injustice, I don’t see any positivity in this.

“I’m really upset because sometimes you can accept this situation. But I don’t see honesty in this kind of situation, when I see this I get very upset.

On his departure, Conte added: “The red card – all the people came in after the decision to disallow the goal and then they came to give me a red card because I’m the most popular person on the pitch.

“We deserved the win, in the end we know what happened. I hope the club understand this and in the right situation speak to whom they need to speak. The club must be strong.

“This situation is causing major major damage. If we go out and then…’

Conte added: “We need one point next week, but I don’t understand why we have to wait for one game when we could have completed qualifying tonight.

“If you invite the kind of situation — it’s unbelievable — you’re doing a lot of damage.”

Sporting head coach Ruben Amorim said: “Last year we were a bit lucky at certain times, this season has been a very difficult season so I hope for the best and he [Kane] was offside and it was a good moment.

“I like the VAR, it’s mostly fair. I haven’t seen the footage – for us it’s very good for Antonio Conte, it’s very bad tonight. That’s football.’

Spurs defender Matt Doherty added: “I think you can tell from the celebrations that we thought we had won it. I’m not exactly sure what happened in the end.

Conte now has plenty to think about for next week’s crucial trip to Marseille, on which their hopes in the league now likely rest.

“I thought it was a different phase of the game because it went backwards and hit a defender. I’ll have to look in the rulebook. Some of us have no idea what happened.

“If we’re honest, we didn’t play very well. They wiped us out in the first half and deserved to take the lead.

‘We are the best of the group. It’s not how we wanted the night to go, but it’s still in our hands.”
