Red Bull to confirm decision on Sergio Perez’s future BEFORE Christmas – with 22-year-old in the driving seat to replace the six-time race winner
- Sergio Perez finished almost 300 points behind his teammate in the final standings
- The Mexican claimed just four podium finishes all season during a miserable campaign
- It is expected that New Zealand-born Liam Lawson will replace him at Red Bull
Red Bull is expected to confirm Sergio Perez’s departure before Christmas, a report has revealed.
The six-time race winner, who endured a miserable 2024 campaign, has discussed his potential future role, with an ambassadorial position and cutting ties among possibilities, the report claims.
Perez signed a two-year extension with the Austrian manufacturer in May this year, but has since finished eighth in the Drivers’ Championship, 285 points behind his teammate and champion Max Verstappen.
According to ESPNThe Mexican is now likely to leave the manufacturer and be replaced by Liam Lawson, who impressed in the second half of the season after filling in for Daniel Ricciardo at Red Bull’s sister team Visa RB.
Ahead of the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, 22-year-old Lawson said: ‘I think next week would be a time where I would expect to get some information.
“What I’m focusing on is having a seat. This weekend [Abu Dhabi] is my last chance to show that, and why I feel like I should be here.

‘I feel like I’ve made the most of every opportunity, but I certainly haven’t executed everything perfectly, and there are things I’ll learn from thinking about these races.
“I would say I definitely tried my best and gave my best at every opportunity. Every decision, whatever I did at that moment, felt like the best thing I could do, but of course you never drive the perfect race.’
Meanwhile, Perez is almost guaranteed to be without a racing seat in Formula 1 in 2025. Completely cutting ties with Red Bull would give him the freedom to race in other categories next season.
General Motors’ new Cadillac team, which has an agreement in principle to be the eleventh team at the start in 2026, could present a direct route back for the Mexican driver.
