Recall effort targeting Republican leader in Wisconsin expected to fail

Wisconsin’s bipartisan election board is expected to reject petitions seeking to force a recall of the state’s Republican-elect who has drawn the ire of former President Donald Trump.

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s bipartisan election board was expected Thursday to reject petitions seeking to force a recall of the state’s elected Republican, who has drawn the ire of former President Donald Trump.

Trump supporters angry with Assembly Speaker Robin Vos launched the recall, citing his refusal to decertify President Joe Biden’s narrow 2020 victory in the state. Vos further angered Trump supporters when he did not support a plan to oust the state’s top elect Meagan Wolfe. officially.

Wisconsin Elections Commission officials recommended rejecting the petition on Wednesday, saying organizers had not collected enough valid signatures. The committee scheduled a vote for Thursday, after which it was expected to officially reject the recall.

Vos dismissed the petition’s organizers as “whack jobs and idiots” and previously said the effort had failed after the validity of thousands of signatures was challenged.

Vos is the most powerful Republican in the Republican Party-led parliament. He was first elected in 2004 and is the longest-serving Speaker of the Assembly in the state’s history, having held the position since 2013.

Organizers of the recall, realizing that their initial effort was unlikely to generate enough signatures, launched a second recall last month. That effort is ongoing and has yet to be submitted to the Election Commission for review.
