“I feel like I have two parts of my personality that take over when that happens,” he said on CBS Sunday Mornings in 2022.

“When I used to go out with Letterman, I was nervous. But I remember standing backstage before the curtain opened, and I thought to myself, ‘I’m dying. I’m literally dying here. The curtain will open and I’ll just be a symphony of vomit, something terrible is just going to happen! he remembered.

Reynolds explained, “But as soon as that curtain opens – and this happens a lot in my work – it’s like this little guy takes over. And he says, “I got this. You’re cool.” I feel my heart rate drop and my breathing calm down, and I just go outside and I’m a different person. And I leave that interview thinking, ‘God, I’d love to be that guy.’

The Deadpool star first shared his anxiety struggles in May 2021 during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“Part of that is because I have three daughters at home and part of my job as a parent is to model behavior and model what it’s like to be sad, and model what it’s like to be anxious or angry. That there is room for all these things,” he said of his fight against mental health care.

Reynolds continued, “The house I grew up in wasn’t really meant for me. And that doesn’t mean my parents were neglectful, but they come from a different generation.’

Reynolds also stated that he wanted to “destigmatize things and create a conversation about it” [mental health].’

“I know that when I felt at absolute rock bottom, it was usually because I felt like I was alone in something that I was feeling,” he recalled. “So I think when people talk about it, I don’t necessarily dwell on it or complain about it, but I think it’s important to talk about it. And when you talk about it, it frees other people a little bit.’
