Real Madrid have been crowned La Liga champions after Barcelona failed to beat Girona.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side moved 13 points clear at the top of the table with a 3-0 win against Cadiz on Saturday thanks to goals from Brahmin Diaz, Jobe Bellingham and Joselu.

The result meant Barcelona had to beat their Catalan rivals to have any chance of knocking them off top spot.

Xavi’s side got off to a perfect start at the Estadi Montilivi, with Andreas Christensen putting them ahead after just three minutes.

Girona have consistently punched above their weight this season and the City Football Group side hit back immediately after falling behind to level through Artem Dovbyk.

On the verge of half-time, Robert Lewandowski restored Barca’s lead from the penalty spot to take his tally to 24 for the season in all competitions.

However, the hosts hit back after half-time and three goals in ten minutes dealt the fatal blow to their opponents’ title hopes.

Substitute Portu equalized before former Real youngster Miguel Gutierrez put his side ahead with a deflected goal from close range.

Portu then doubled their total for the match to put the result beyond doubt, scoring an excellent volley from the edge of the penalty area.

The whistle sealed Barca’s fate to hand the title to Los Blancos with four games remaining, matching the performance of their Classico rivals last season.

The win also confirmed a Champions League spot for Girona for the first time in their history, with the club not returning to the top flight until 2022.
