Real Madrid ‘want Toni Kroos to sign a new contract – with Carlo Ancelotti’s side optimistic about extending the midfielder’s time at the Bernabeu into an 11th season’

Real Madrid are reportedly hoping to keep Toni Kroos at the club for another season.

Kroos, 34, has made 455 appearances for the Spanish giants since joining from Bayern Munich in 2014.

During his ten seasons at the Bernabeu, the midfielder has won 20 trophies, including four Champions Leagues, three LaLiga titles and five Club World Cups.

Despite his age and the emergence of Real’s young midfielders such as Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, Kroos has still made 38 appearances this season even though his contract expires at the end of the season.

And according to Fabrizio RomanoReal would like to extend that deal, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side confident of their prospects to do so.

There was speculation over Kroos’ future last summer, with the 34-year-old only extending his contract on June 21, days before it expired.

If he were to sign a new contract, Kroos’ time in the Spanish capital would extend into an 11th season, despite several other members of Real’s famous ‘three-peat’ Champions League-winning team having progressed in recent years booked.

The 2014 World Cup winner – who ended a three-year international exile to return to Germany ahead of the 2024 European Championship – recently admitted he is in no rush to decide his future, but insisted this is a matter that he has to solve.

Asked about his international future after the tournament this week, Kroos said: ‘I have to clarify the issue of my (club) contract first. I don’t have one for next season.

‘There are no problems whatsoever. My relationship with the club is too good to have any problems.

‘Both parties are relaxed. The club is having a good season and so am I. I hope we can reach a satisfactory solution.’

Kroos shone during his international return against France, assisting Florian Wirtz after just seven seconds as Julian Nagelsmann’s side won impressively 2-0 after an extremely difficult period.

After the match, Nagelsmann praised his returning midfielder, saying: ‘Unbelievable, to be honest. With the ball we all know he is an extraordinary player.

‘But also how he got involved in duels. He is a very normal boy and integrates into the group. That is very good.’

When pressed on the issue of Kroos’ club future in February, Ancelotti remained tight-lipped but pointed to the relaxed situation in which both parties find themselves.

“His success rate is the same as ten years ago, his quality has not changed,” said the Italian.

‘He plays in a team with a lot of energy and his quality in terms of pace of play is therefore more noticeable. He plays very well.

“Whatever he decides, we have to respect it. I think a player should leave when he is at the top. He could be there this year, or next year, I don’t know, because his performances have always been good.

‘He never had any highs or lows. But everyone, even as a coach, has to stop at the top of their career. As long as he doesn’t lose (his motivation), he can continue.”

Real return to action after the international break with a match against Athletic Bilbao on March 31.

Ancelotti’s side look to win LaLiga with Los Blancos eight points clear of Barcelona with nine games remaining as they head into a crucial Champions League quarter-final against Man City next month.
