Dani Carvajal will undergo surgery in the coming days after suffering a serious knee injury during Real Madrid’s 2-0 win against Villarreal.

Carvajal, 32, was in tears as he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher on Saturday after a challenge with Yeremy Pino.

A statement from the Spanish club read: ‘Following tests carried out on Dani Carvajal by Real Madrid’s medical service, the player has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a torn external collateral ligament and a torn patellar tendon in his right leg. He will undergo surgery in the coming days.’

In a post on Instagram, Spain international Carvajal wrote: ‘Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti said after the match: ‘Dani Carvajal’s screams were heard, something that doesn’t happen every day.
