Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas’ ex-wife Sara Carbonero, 38, rushed into hospital

The ex-wife of Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas has reportedly had emergency surgery three years after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Journalist Sara Carbonero, who famously kissed the former international during a post-match interview after Spain won the 2010 World Cup, was reportedly hospitalized after a routine checkup.

The Spanish magazine Lecturas reported that the emergency surgery took place Monday at the University Hospital of Navarra in Madrid.

Neither Iker, who officially retired from football in August 2020 at the age of 39, some 13 months after suffering a heart attack, or his ex-wife have yet to make an official comment.

Carbonero, a respected journalist, is said to have been hospitalized after a routine checkup and her two children are being cared for by her sister

Their two children would stay with Sara’s sister Irene while Casillas continues to work in Qatar.

It was not immediately clear tonight what problem the doctors had identified.

Lecturas said in an exclusive report now being reproduced by several other Spanish newspapers: “After a check-up, the medical team decided that Sara’s admission was urgent.”

It added, referring to Casillas’ decision to remain in Qatar, where he is debuting as an official sports commentator for Spain’s state broadcaster RTVE: “After being informed of what had happened, Casillas offered to forego the World Cup to to take care of the children. decision that was ultimately not taken to make the situation as normal as possible.

Sara, who currently works in radio, announced in May 2019 that she had undergone surgery for ovarian cancer while she and Iker were still together.

Doctors discovered the malignant tumor shortly after the heart attack, bringing her then-husband’s playing career to an early end.

The 38-year-old underwent surgery at the prestigious Ruber International Clinic in Madrid to remove the tumor before undergoing several months of chemotherapy.

Nicknamed Saint Iker for his ability to produce spectacular saves, Casillas officially announced his retirement from professional football last August following his heart attack in May 2019 while with top Portuguese side Porto.

He made 510 appearances during his 16 years with Real Madrid and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in football history.

He secretly married Sara on March 20, 2016, three months before the birth of their second child, Lucas, but details of the union did not emerge until 10 days later.

The former couple confirmed they had split in March last year, just three days after appearing to deny reports of a breakup.

They admitted their love had gone “parted paths” but said they would stay close to continue the “great job” of raising their two children.

In October, the 41-year-old former footballer faced criticism after being criticized on Twitter for a controversial “I’m gay” joke.

He allegedly tweeted the joke in response to media reports linking him to a range of women, including Gerard Pique’s ex-Shakira.

Casillas’ claims that he had been hacked were met with derision in many parts of the world, with former Celta Vigo and Villarreal footballer Jose Enrique accusing him of lying.

Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol responded to Casillas’ tweet with the offhand reply: “It’s time to tell our story Iker” before apologizing.
