Real Madrid could move to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold as early as January, according to a report.

The Liverpool defender is out of contract at the end of the season, with speculation surrounding his future and seemingly little progress being made in contract negotiations.

He has spent his entire career with the Reds and has become one of the best passers in world football. Madrid’s interest in his services has been little secret in recent months.

Although he could still sign a new contract at Anfield, it is increasingly looking like he will leave the club. The 26-year-old will be allowed to speak to other clubs in January and move for free at the end of the season. and Liverpool thought it was increasingly accepting that there might not be a deal.

He may not last that long in the meantime. According to MarcaMadrid could move ahead of schedule to sign Alexander-Arnold in a bid to solve some of their mid-season defensive issues.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team are looking for a solution at right back after Dani Carvajal’s injury

The report shows that Madrid have long been planning their January activities, with work has accelerated in recent days due to the international break.

First-choice right-back Dani Carvajal suffered a season-ending knee injury in his side’s final game, with manager Carlo Ancelotti now looking for a replacement.

Alexander-Arnold is the club’s first choice to replace him from a transfer perspective, while the likes of Jeremy Frimpong are also admired.

However, it is understood that Frimpong’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen runs until 2027, meaning it would be easier to do business with Alexander-Arnold due to the limited involvement Liverpool could have in the deal.

Madrid are thought to believe Liverpool could be willing to do business in January to recoup some form of fee for one of their key players.

However, it is thought that Madrid will only consider a winter move if internal solutions do not work.

Madrid would also like to sign a left-footed centre-back.

In the meantime, Alexander-Arnold is not the only concern for Liverpool, as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also out of contract at the end of the year.

Salah almost made a plea for negotiations earlier this season when he suggested there had been no talks, while there was still no sign of any agreement with any of the three players.

Alexander-Arnold joined Liverpool in 2006, while Van Dijk signed in 2018 and Salah in 2017.

Together they have played 957 games for Liverpool (Alexander-Arnold 319, Van Dijk 279, Salah 359).
