  • Eden Hazard’s contract with Madrid has been terminated by mutual agreement
  • The Belgian winger had endured a nightmare with the Spanish giants
  • Reports now suggest that retirement has become ‘an option’ for the Belgian

Eden Hazard’s nightmare at Real Madrid is finally coming to an end after the two sides mutually agreed to terminate his contract on Saturday.

The Belgian winger has failed to live up to expectations since joining the club from Chelsea in 2019 and has made just six appearances in the Spanish top flight this year.

In a statement on their website, the club said: “Real Madrid CF and Eden Hazard have reached an agreement whereby the player will be fired from the club on June 30, 2023.

Eden Hazard has been part of our club for four seasons, during which he has won 8 titles: 1 European Cup, 1 Club World Cup, 1 European Super Cup, 2 Leagues, 1 Copa del Rey and 2 Spanish Super Cups.

“Real Madrid would like to express its affection for Eden Hazard and wish him and his entire family the best of luck in this new phase.”

So much was expected of the exciting Belgian talent, but with just seven goals in four years, it’s fair to say he’s struggled in Spain.

With such a poor performance from his 76 appearances for Los Blancos, it is understandable why the Spanish giants have decided to let him go for free.

It’s a sad end to his Madrid career as he has become the club’s all-time record following his move from Chelsea for a fee that could have been as high as £150m.

After struggling with injuries in recent years, it’s no wonder some teams are hesitant to take another chance on the Belgian.

During his four years in Spain, Hazard missed 78 games through injury, with ankle injuries and hamstring problems being the most prominent issues.

As stated in the club’s farewell statement to Hazard, the Belgian lifted eight trophies during his stay at Madrid, but played supporting roles in all of them.

There can be a lot of disappointment when looking back at Hazard’s time in Spain, given the drop in performance levels following his spell at Chelsea.

During seven years at Stamford Bridge, the Belgian has racked up 110 goals and 92 assists from 352 appearances and stunned fans with his antics on the west London pitch.
