A Florida entrepreneur has been charged with shooting to death the son of a high school football coach as terrifying footage shows their altercation before shots were fired.

Lloyd Preston Brewer III, 57, was charged with first-degree murder after Garrett Hughes, 21, was shot dead in Key West. Brewer confronted Hughes after he urinated on the side of his building.

Brewer stated that the 21-year-old would pull something out of his waistband during the altercation on Feb. 13. Hughes was unarmed.

Brewer was initially charged with manslaughter, but was upgraded after an indictment by a Monroe County grand jury.

The business owner has also been slapped with additional counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and violation of a concealed firearms permit.

Released footage shows Hughes leaving shirtless, leaving Conch Town Liquor & Lounge just after 12:30 p.m. Brewer can be seen reaching for something in his waistband and raising his arms.

According to a police report, Brewer assumed a “shooting stance,” but it’s unclear when this happens in the video.

Brewer owns the small multi-store mall that houses the bar that Hughes came out of.

Police also released the 911 call, which was made by Brewer himself.

The caller says, “Yes, hello, I just shot someone.” To which the dispatcher says, ‘You just shot someone? Who did you shoot?’

The caller replies, “I don’t know – what’s his name?” Garrett Hughes.”

Then the dispatcher says, “Okay, why did you shoot him?”

Brewer says, “He came at me aggressively in my parking lot at Conch Town.”

The business owner is being held and his next hearing is scheduled for July 7.

A Key West police detective wrote in a post-shooting report, “Brewer said it looked like Hughes was about to pull something out of his waistband.

“Brewer could not identify exactly what was aggressive or threatening about Hughes’ behavior and denied seeing Hughes in possession of any guns.”

Brewer’s attorney, Chris Mancini, said in a statement to Local 10 News, “The Monroe County (state attorney) has asserted in the media that the videotape evidence in this case shows things it definitely doesn’t show.

The SAO has tried to convince the public that ‘this was a senseless murder’ and that Mr. Ground defense in this case.’

Meanwhile, the victim’s family has filed a memo under the terms of Marsy’s law in an effort to detain Brewer for his trial. They claim he poses a flight risk – because he has owned land in Georgia for numerous generations.

The detention memo also alleges that Brewer has a criminal history from 1985 described as “acts of violence, firearms, assault, alcohol, drugs and dishonesty.”
