Reading are in talks with former Southampton boss Ruben Selles to become their new manager after Chris Wilder turned down the Royals

  • Reading have been without a permanent manager since Paul Ince’s sacking in April
  • Chris Wilder turned down the opportunity to take charge of the League One club
  • Ruben Selles left Southampton after relegation from the Premier League

Ruben Selles is in talks with Reading to become their next manager.

The former Southampton boss has emerged as a contender after Chris Wilder turned down the chance to take over at the troubled League One club.

Reading have been without a permanent manager since the sacking of Paul Ince with five games left in the Championship last season.

Selles took charge of the final months of Southampton’s Premier League campaign after replacing Nathan Jones, but was unable to keep up with the Saints.

The South Coast club confirmed last month that the 40-year-old would not be staying at the club following talks with him.

“Southampton Football Club can confirm that it has held talks with the manager of the men’s first team, Ruben Selles, and has decided that his contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of the season,” the club said in a statement.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for taking the management position at a difficult time for the club and for giving everything as we tried to stay in the Premier League.

Ruben will take charge of the team for the final game against Liverpool on Sunday at St Mary’s. We wish him all the best for his future career.”

Wilder, who left Watford in May, was offered the opportunity to take over League One Reading but turned down the job.
