RB Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schroder has revealed why Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho struggled during his loan spell at the club, after the youngster’s move to the Bundesliga was terminated before joining Hull for the rest of the season.

The former Fulham midfielder was recruited by the Reds in 2022 as Liverpool paid £7.7million for the then teenager as they banked on his future development.

A move to Germany’s top-flight was intended to prepare him for his return to Jurgen Klopp’s first team, but the Portugal international has struggled to find form abroad.

He previously played a crucial role in Fulham earning promotion back to the Premier League and Schroder explained that Carvalho struggled to cope with the competition in Leipzig.

The 21-year-old recently swapped Germany for England, returning to the Championship with Hull on loan until the end of the season. Schroder explained why the initial lease with Leipzig had been terminated prematurely.

“We consciously chose Fabio last summer,” he told reporters in Germany.

‘He has had a great season with Fulham in the English second division, which is very physical.

‘We said to ourselves: great talent, good age, has already gained his experience.

‘Yet you only get to know a player as an end product when he is there.

‘Fabio has a great character. But he realized: ‘Okay, there is a competitor, I have to do more!’. And we noticed that he didn’t want to compete.’

Carvalho made 15 appearances during his short spell in Germany, but failed to score or register an assist for Marco Rose’s side.

Liverpool remain confident in Carvalho’s potential and believe a temporary return to England’s second tier is the best option to secure more consistent minutes for the youngster.

Hull’s style under manager Liam Rosenior and the progress teammate Tyler Morton made while on loan convinced Liverpool that the MKM Stadium was the best destination.
