Raygun: Tell-tale signs from Australia breakdancer’s PhD that she was destined for Olympic Games disaster

Rachael Gunn took the world by surprise with her memorable performance at the Paris Olympics. Fans were left in awe by the Australian’s unconventional breakdance moves.

But the 36-year-old, better known as Raygun, had predicted her disastrous performance seven years before she took the stage in France.

University lecturer Gunn went viral after her performance, which included impersonations of a kangaroo and a snake, scored zero points in the first women’s breakdancing competition.

Gunn has since become known as a complete obsession with all things breaking. He took up the sport in 2008 and began his PhD in 2011.

And now fans have discovered the 36-year-old’s thesis on breakingtitled: Deterritorialising gender in the Sydney breakdance scene: One B-girl’s experiences with B-boying.

The dissertation abstract, published in February 2017, predicted Raygun’s iconic routine in Paris.

‘I use analytical auto-ethnography and interviews with scene members in collaboration with theoretical frameworks from Deleuze and Guttari, Butler, Bourdieu and other feminist and post-structuralist philosophers, to critically examine how the capacities of bodies are constituted and shaped in the Sydney breakdance scene, and also to locate the potential for moments of transgression,’ she writes.

‘In other words, I conceptualize the breaking body not as a ‘body’ composed by rules and assumptions, but as an assemblage open to new rhizomatic connections.’

Simply put, Gunn challenges dance norms and believes that breaking should be used as a vehicle for extended, unusual dance.

Fans certainly saw this in France, where Raygun writhed across the floor and performed the spray, much to the amazement of the onlookers at home.

Head judge MGbility revealed why Gunn scored a measly zero points for her three dances.

β€œI personally feel very sorry,” MGbility told News Corp.

“The breaking and hip hop community is definitely behind her. She was just trying to bring something new, something original and something that represents her country.

‘Breaking news is all about originality and bringing something new from your own country or region. And that’s exactly what Raygun did.

‘She was inspired by her surroundings, which in this case was, you know – kangaroo. The animal.

‘For breaking, if you’re looking for innovation or originality, you always look outside of dancing. Martial arts, how the animals move, everything.’

But that didn’t stop her from becoming an internet meme, as superstar Adele shared her thoughts on Raygun during her concert in Munich.

“I’m not saying anything, but I think this is the best thing the Olympics have ever seen,” Adele told her fans.

‘Has anyone seen the breakdancing lady?

‘I didn’t even know breakdancing was an Olympic sport now. That’s f***ing amazing. Really.

‘Aaron, my percussionist, pees his pants laughing just thinking about it.’

Adele then went on to say that she is not sure if Raygun is a serious contender for the competition, with many fans comparing her moves to Mr Gee from the Australian comedy Summer Heights High.

‘I’m not sure if it was a joke, but it made me really happy and my friends and I laughed our heads off for almost 24 hours.’

“I just wanted to know if you saw it. If you didn’t, leave the show and google it because it’s LOLZ.

β€œIt’s so f***ing funny and it’s my favorite event of the Olympics so far.”
