Rasmus Hojlund has been dropped to the bench for Manchester United’s final home game of the season against Newcastle.
The Danish striker has scored just one goal in his last eight games in the Premier League, having previously scored six in seven games.
His worrying form comes at a time when the Red Devils have also struggled for results, with just one win in their last nine games, against relegated Sheffield United.
United have an FA Cup final against Man City later this month and reports suggest the club are monitoring Hojlund’s minutes ahead of their biggest game of the season.
Roy Keane has now told Sky Sports that manager Erik ten Hag may be ‘sending a message to the board’ with his decision to drop Hojlund.

He said: ‘Maybe the manager is sending a message to the board that he doesn’t have many options.
‘Sometimes I think managers do that with a few games to go, to show that they need reinforcements. He obviously hopes that he is ready for the cup final.’
