Rasmus Hojlund has admitted he was hit by the criticism that followed the Premier League drought after joining Manchester United.
He has also spoken of the relief of ‘silencing people’ and believes some of his opponents were only lashing out at him out of jealousy.
The Dane went 14 games without a goal in the Premier League after joining from Atalanta for £72 million, despite scoring five goals in the Champions League group stages.
He subsequently featured in six consecutive league games, scoring seven goals, before suffering a muscle injury in late February.

‘Of course it bothered me a bit that people kept talking about this Premier League goal that hadn’t been scored, while not many people were talking about the fact that I was top scorer in the Champions League at the same time.
‘I couldn’t really figure that out, so it was even more fun to change that 0 to 1.
‘I could feel the support from day one, but it is clear that there are many who want to put you down for reaching the level you have reached, and there are many who might be jealous.
‘There have been a lot of positive reactions, but there are also some negative ones that I have had to sort out. At first it was a bit difficult to distinguish between one and the other.
‘I come from a generation where mobile and social media are read an incredible amount. I quickly realized that you rarely get anything out of the good or the bad, so I quickly decided to put it away for a competition.”
