Ranger injured and armed person making threats dies at Yellowstone, park says

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. — An armed man who made unknown threats in Yellowstone National Park has died and a park ranger was hospitalized Thursday after a shooting, authorities said.

The shooting occurred in Canyon Village, an area in the central part of the park with a campground, lodging and visitor center, after rangers responded to a report of a person making threats, park officials said in a statement. The statement did not say exactly where the shots were fired or whether visitors were affected by what it called “a significant law enforcement incident” that began overnight.

The ranger was in stable condition in hospital, according to the statement. It did not specify how the ranger was injured.

The name of the deceased has not been released.

The FBI is assisting the National Park Service in its investigation into the shooting, but the agency declined to comment further.
