Rain man! Burning Man is a washout with organizers forced to close the gate into the site for final weekend as torrential downpours turn usually bone dry desert into a slippery ‘muddy paste’

Burning Man’s final weekend in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert appears to be a war of attrition, with torrential rain turning the area into a massive mud bath.

The weather turned so bad on Friday night that all traffic to and from the site was halted, while all bike and buggy rides around the huge site were banned.

The organizers were forced to forbid people from leaving the site because the slippery and muddy conditions made for treacherous driving conditions.

“Don’t drive your vehicle. Do not cycle or push your bicycle around. Stay where you are. Secure structures and assets in your camp,” a message on Twitter urged.

All planned burns for tonight (Friday 1/9) are postponed until further notice. Sit down, don’t drive, don’t cycle, be safe! Shelter in place!’ added another one.

The gate remains closed and no one is allowed in or out by road or airport, Burning Man writes online.

The organizers even asked people to stop pushing or cycling, fearing the tires could cause deep ruts after the ground softened from the rainfall.

Burning Man organizers instructed attendees to take shelter on site, not operate generators or other electrically powered instruments standing in the water, and cover anything electrical.

You are not allowed to drive or cycle in the rain. Stay where you are. Destroy your camp. Cover or protect anything electrical. Check with your campmates and neighbors to see if they are prepared and help where needed,” another message read as the weather turned.

Driving was not allowed in Black Rock City, as the horrific weather threatened to turn the desert floor into a muddy paste.

About one to two-tenths of an inch of rain is expected, which may not seem like much, but even a small amount of rain can cause problems in the Black Rock Desert, which is mostly bone dry.

The rain made the ground extremely slippery, with sticky mud sticking to bicycle tires and shoe treads, causing attendees to shuffle.

“It’s just very slippery. And you can’t drive and it’s hard to maneuver through that and things like that. (The soil) actually turns into a paste. So yeah, definitely not ideal,” meteorologist Scott McGuire said SFGate.

Friday and Sunday are expected to be the wettest days of the festival and although rain will make the playa unpleasant, flash flooding is not expected.

A status update on travel within Black Rock City is expected at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Temperatures are also expected to be much cooler than last year, with weekend maximums expected to be in the 70s – much lower than the triple-digit temperatures at last year’s meeting.

The event – a “rejection of corporatism and capitalism” – has brought some 70,000 people to the Nevada desert for a range of hedonistic pursuits.

But the weather was not favorable to visitors as torrential rains flooded the area over the weekend, causing major delays for those trying to get inside.

Thousands have gathered in Black Rock City – located in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert – for the iconic event that has been around for nearly 40 years.

The event has become a beacon for Burners — the name for frequent Black Rock City residents — who wait for the festivities all year long.

Despite its reputation, Burning Man organizers define the event not as a festival, but as a “community and global cultural movement.”
