Micah Richards insists new Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling was wrong to talk of ‘broken promises’ at Manchester City, stating that no player is promised anything in Pep Guardiola’s side.
Unhappy with his role at the Etihad, the England international made a £50million switch to Stamford Bridge this summer in the hope of carving out first team opportunities more consistently.
But ex-City right-back Richards feels Sterling was wrong to feel aggrieved with his game time, arguing he had plenty of time on the pitch with the champions last season.

Ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Leeds, Richards told Sky Sports: ‘In terms of the broken promises, when you go to Man City, no one is promised anything.
‘You look at Aguero, one of the best ever. He thought he should be playing. Pep is all about the team.
‘I think with Raheem he’s a Man City legend, he’s won four Premier League titles. He talks about these broken promises but I looked at his stats before and he made 47 appearances last season and won the Premier League.
‘Yes in some games, he was frustrated not playing but Man City is always evolving and if you don’t fit into that plan, you’ve got to suck it up.’

When asked in an interview with Geoff Shreeves earlier this week whether he holds any resentment towards City, Sterling was keen to show it was all water under the bridge.
‘No, I couldn’t be in a happier place now,’ the 27-year-old said.
‘Of course, at the time I was fuming, raging, all of that. But it’s in the past and I can only focus on the present, which is now and here at Chelsea to go out and showcase my talents once again. It’s a blessing in disguise.’

Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink empathised with Sterling, claiming that his decision to join the Blues was the right choice.
He said: ‘For Sterling, it’s a decision for him to make and I think he’s done the right thing.
‘Going to a club where he’s going to be appreciated, he’s going to be their main player.
‘Just from his body language you could tell that he was never really the main man at Man City and I always thought eventually he would go.’
