Radio 2 star DJ Spoony hospitalised for emergency brain surgery after a month of headaches – as Davina McCall reaches out to share support after her tumour battle
Radio 2 star DJ Spoony has revealed he was admitted to hospital for emergency brain surgery over Christmas.
He shared the news in an Instagram post on Tuesday, writing, “That was one of the best Christmases” I’ve ever had. I am very grateful for everything it has shown me. For everything I have. For all the love, hugs and…love.
“So…I had a headache for 3/4 weeks and went to urgent care on Saturday the 21st to get it checked out. (I rarely get them)
‘They did some tests and said they wanted to give me a CT scan. The scan showed that I had a small bleed in the brain (which had stopped bleeding) which was causing a bit of pressure on the brain, hence the headache.
‘They said they were referring me to Adenbrooks because they needed to operate as quickly as possible. Strange, because I had been working and training hard the entire time I had the headache.

‘I spent 4 nights in hospital and finally had surgery at 2am on 24.12. By their very high standards, it was a routine operation to sort my subural hematoma. Within 10 minutes of the operation I was on my way back to the ward. Fully alert. Chat. Not dizzy after the general.
‘I couldn’t wait to have that banana next to my bed as I hadn’t had anything since 1pm the day before. That was the best banana I’ve ever had. As for the ginger shot. Perfect.
‘The strange thing was that the headache went away immediately. 4 weeks of this beating and finally peace at the top.
“I woke up in the hospital on Christmas morning. I was so grateful. Had something special to look forward to. Home, to my family and friends. Everyone who had been incredible these past few days. The visits, support, phone calls, messages. Very humiliating.
“However, there was some sadness in waking up near some people not knowing where they were, who would have spent much, if not all, of the day without loved ones. I think about them every day and hope they make progress in their recovery.
‘Here are a few photos from those four days. They thought I wouldn’t be home until later in the day, so I thought I would surprise them all. Laura’s face was (is) a treat
‘Thank you to Bedford Hospital for the scan and Addenbrokes for completing the task. You really are the best in the business. All the nurses, doctors, health assistants who took care of me. With thanks to the NS. Thank you Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards, Arne Slot and Mo Salah.
