Radiant Kate Middleton is wonderful in white as the Princess of Wales shows her prowess as the Queen of tonal dressing at Christmas carol concert

She may be the Princess of Wales, but she's the queen of tonal dressing – and Kate lived up to that title last night like a vision in white.

Forget the festive clichés of red and green – this was the right time to move away from the colorful pantsuits she's been seen in lately. After all, what could be more stylish and Christmassy than winter white?

While she's kept the modern high-waisted, wide-leg trousers – this stylish pair costs £299 from British brand Holland Cooper – Kate has updated the look with a lightweight crew-neck knit.

Her fabulous maxi coat was custom made by Alexander McQueen. Even the Strathberry Mosaic bag was brilliant white.

Her mother-of-pearl earrings, from French luxury jewelery company Van Cleef & Arpels, retail for £6,000. And where white pumps would have been a step too far, she cleverly opted for Gianvito Rossi pumps, £650, in subtle nude suede.

This is the kind of quiet luxury that only royals and A-listers can achieve – very few of us can afford to wear white.

Kate hosted her Together At Christmas event at Westminster Abbey, welcoming her family, members of the monarchy and inspiring individuals to celebrate those who support children and families.

The Prince of Wales arrived with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, after Kate traveled ahead to thank celebrities for agreeing to perform, including Oscar winner Jim Broadbent and singers Beverley Knight and Adam Lambert.

As they walked into the forecourt of the abbey, the royal children paused to post Christmas cards in a special letterbox, containing messages for children who might be struggling this Christmas, something open to all young people present.

The young royals – George, 10, Charlotte, eight, and five-year-old Louis – were all smartly dressed while their mother wore a Chris Kerr coat.

Before the concert started, Kate met celebrities in the abbey's beautiful 16th-century Lady Chapel, and during a chat with Broadbent she expressed her appreciation for him agreeing to read an extract from Letters From Father Christmas from Lord Of The Rings -author JRR Tolkien.

She said: 'Thank you for your time as I know the run up to Christmas can be busy for people.'

Kate appeared to joke with multi-instrumentalist Collier, who has posted music instructional videos on YouTube, about her daughter learning to play the piano, and he joked “lots of plink and pop.”

She also walked around the Abbey before the start of the event and spoke to young people who had done inspiring activities.
