It may just be my personal kryptonite, but STAKE always worries me. In fact, not only STAKE, but also its close cousins STATE and STAVE. Yes, there are others in this group – most notably STARE and STALE – but the way I play Quordle doesn’t matter. The problem is that I start with three seed words: STARE, DOILY and PUNCH. They use fifteen of the most common letters and exclude many answers – but not STATE, ROD and STAKE.
Add to that the fact that I wasted a guess on PUREE (the answer was PURGE) and I almost came unstuck today. Luckily I had the presence of mind to play KNAVE on the eighth gamble, which confirmed that STAKE was the answer, so I escaped with my streak intact, by just a hair.
