A police officer has been hospitalized after being accidentally shot during a training session.

A male sergeant suffered the gunshot wound after an “accidental discharge during routine firearms training” at a Childers police station around 10am on Thursday.

“Initial information indicates that the officer, an instructor, suffered a single gunshot wound to the calf after another officer was accidentally fired during live-fire training,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

The officer was rushed to hospital after suffering non-life-threatening injuries in the incident

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and his condition is currently stable.

Queensland Police provide support to officers as well as their colleagues and families.

The North Coast Region will investigate the incident and Queensland occupational health and safety have been notified.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll told her fellow officers that a female senior officer accidentally shot the sergeant in the leg.

“Initial information indicates that the sergeant, who was the security officer at the time, was trying to prevent a fellow officer from tripping as they backed up during a live-fire training session, when the accidental discharge occurred,” Ms Carroll wrote to officers from the police. Courier Mail reported.

“A single bullet was fired, striking the sergeant in the lower leg.

“I have been assured that everything possible is being done by the wonderful health professionals involved in his treatment.”
