Landlord threatens to terminate Queensland tenant’s lease over ridiculously strict policy on guests

A landlord has threatened to terminate the lease if the tenant allows his mother to stay in a rental property for a week.

The confused tenant turned to an online tenant group for advice after their landlord said the mother could only stay in the rental for a maximum of two days.

“My mother is coming to stay with me for a week, so I asked my real estate agent if that would be okay,” the tenant wrote.

‘My mother travels six hours to my house. The property said no, she can only stay two nights because she doesn’t have a lease.

‘Is this true? I’ve never heard of this and have had problems with other rental properties I’ve lived in.’

Underneath the post, the tenant left the property’s full response, which read: ‘How nice that your mother is coming, but unfortunately she can only stay with you for two nights.

“Otherwise you break the contract and your lease is terminated.”

Several commenters were shocked that the tenant told their landlord about the upcoming visit.

“Why on earth did she ask that?” someone said.

“Why is she asking for permission, her mother isn’t going to live there,” wrote another.

“The property has no control over how long guests stay,” said another.

On its website, Tenants Queensland advises: ‘Your rental property is your home and you have the right to visitors and guests.

‘However, visitors and guests are not allowed to live there, so they cannot stay too long or it could cause problems.’

The organization advised tenants to let their landlord know when guests are coming to visit.

“If you have enough space, this is usually not a problem,” it said.

‘But if you only have a small space, it can lead to problems such as overcrowding or noise pollution. You are responsible for the behavior of your visitors or guests.’
