Queensland house explosion Murrumba Downs: Human remains found inside burnt-down unit

A man who hasn’t been seen since his house ‘blew up’ shared several disturbing Facebook posts in the hours before the fire.

Garry William Maidment’s two-storey unit on Nambucca Close in Murrumba Downs, north Brisbane, caught fire at about 12.50am on Wednesday.

Seven fire crews were dispatched to contain the large blaze that destroyed the home and an exclusion zone was established around the complex until 4:55 p.m.

Four nine kilogram gas cylinders were discovered in the living room of the house when detectives were able to enter the property on Thursday morning.

Acting Detective Inspector Stephen Windsor said human remains were found near a fifth gas cylinder in the unit’s garage.

Forensic investigation will take several hours.

Maidment began posting on his Facebook page on Monday about his plan to exact revenge on his corporate body, bank and the Reserve Bank of Australia.

For three days, Mr. Maidment explained how he could no longer pay his mortgage and was at risk of losing his home.

“Now that I can’t afford the new mortgage payment, I’m losing my home,” he wrote.

“Most people would just walk away, but when you’ve cornered a tiger like me, I fight back fiercely and tear you apart.

‘I came up with a plan to financially damage the bank and the legal entity.

‘Do you know what’s good? I don’t have to spend time in jail, because then I’m gone.’

Maidment shared his final message just an hour before Queensland fire and emergency services were called to his unit.

“What remains of my body for my burial is strictly for family members only,” it says.

‘That’s right, I’m adopted so there’s no bloodline. Looks like my body will be a John Doe.”

Other posts shared details about his family life and hatred of “big business.”

“The Reserve Bank board berates poor people with mortgages,” he wrote in a.

Big business profits [have been] very high in the last two years, but the mortgage holders are screwed because of the inflation caused by the profits of big companies.

“My mortgage payments 15 months ago were $1,200 and [now are] just under $3,000.”

Inspector Windsor confirmed at a press conference on Thursday morning that the house was owned by a single man in his 60s.

“The male person has had some challenges and current pressures in life and he’s made some comments about that,” he said.

“Scientific police trained in this area are slow to process cases, making sure every piece of evidence is found.”

The Australian company number for Mr Maidment’s gardening service, Whip ‘n’ Mow North Brisbane, was canceled on 10 July.

Queensland Police said they consider the blaze suspicious but are not looking for a suspect.

Large flames shooting from the house were visible from surrounding suburbs and neighbors up to three miles away reported sounds of an ‘explosion’ shortly before emergency services were called.
