Queensland heatwave: Mercury to soar in the Sunshine State

Queensland is expected to see temperatures as high as 14 degrees above average this week, while Brisbane will see scorching temperatures in the mid-30s on the last day of winter next Saturday.

Temperature records have been broken in the Australian outback in recent days and these unusually warm conditions are set to reach northern New South Wales and Queensland this week.

Brisbane is expected to reach 30 degrees on Monday, with a high of 31 degrees. It will remain warm all week.

According to the Meteorological Bureau, temperatures in the Queensland capital will reach a maximum of 34 degrees Celsius next Saturday.

That is well above the average maximum temperature in the city in August, 21.8 degrees Celsius.

For many in south-east Queensland this will be a big deal: conditions could still be hot when the huge NRL derby between the Brisbane Broncos and Dolphins kicks off at Suncorp Stadium at 5.30pm.

“Temperatures will be well above average across much of Queensland throughout next week and into the weekend,” Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said on Sunday.

‘Overall, temperatures are four to 14 degrees above the August average across much of western, southern and central Queensland, as well as the south-east.

The unusually warm conditions are being caused by record-breaking heat in the outback.

Oodnadatta reached a temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the highest August temperature ever recorded in South Australia.

“We saw the extremely warm conditions reach inland Western Australia late last week and move into central parts of Australia over the weekend,” Bradbury said.

‘Impacting parts of South Australia, the Northern Territory and western Queensland.

“But as we get further into next week we will see the heat increase, particularly across Queensland and North and New South Wales.”

According to the agency, spring and summer are expected to be warmer than average.

“Our long-term forecasts tell the same story. They’ve been doing it for a while: the probability of the maximum temperature being exceeded is very high,” Bradbury said.

‘This means that temperatures in spring and early summer are likely to remain above average.

“That’s not to say we won’t have cooler periods within that three to six month period. We’ll get our usual weather conditions from our cold fronts, our onshore winds.

“But the general trend for that longer term is that conditions are warmer than average.”

Meanwhile, parts of southeastern Australia are expected to experience severe thunderstorms and wild weather on Sunday.

Victoria, southern New South Wales and South Australia are expected to be affected.
