Then and now: As Queen Mary of Denmark turns 52 on Monday, February 5, FEMAIL takes a look at the health and beauty secrets behind the royal family’s age-defying looks

FAT-FAT, CARBOHYDRATING DIET

The Queen Consort’s slim body is thanks to her Danish diet which consists of fish, nuts, seeds, fruits and root vegetables.

Sydney dietitian Susie Burrell told FEMAIL that the Mediterranean diet has long been hailed as one of the healthiest, but Scandinavian diets are just as beneficial, with Denmark’s obesity rate at just 10 percent.

‘It is certainly one of the healthiest diets in the world thanks to its particularly high omega-3 content from a high intake of fatty fish,’ she said.

The nutritionist added that the Scandi diet contains ‘low processed carbohydrates and varied plants from dark bread, seeds and nuts’.

Dietitian Lyndi Cohen echoed Susie’s sentiments, saying that FEMAIL people living in Denmark tend to eat more fish, especially oily fish like salmon, and less meat than a typical Western diet.

She explained that Mary is most likely to eat meals containing oily fish, potatoes, nuts, seeds and cheese, while snacking on fruits and vegetables.

“The ‘Danish diet’ emphasizes high-quality meat when meat is eaten – and lean options,” she said.

The regimen typically has a lower intake of carbohydrates and a high intake of good fats such as nuts, seeds and proteins.

‘The Danish diet includes fruit and encourages snacking on berries, which are rich in antioxidants that can protect against disease,’ said Lyndi.

‘It is also high in root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips and potatoes, while rye bread is a staple food in the diet – mainly because it contains many more nutrients such as B-group vitamins, iron, phytochemicals and magnesium.’

“Rye also contains significantly more fiber than white options, which can support healthy heart health,” she said.

ACTIVE LIFESTYLE

Mary isn’t too strict with her healthy diet and thanks to her very active lifestyle, she is regularly spotted indulging in lavish dinners and glasses of red wine.

The royal family’s favorite activities are walking, jogging and horse riding, and she reportedly has a personal trainer to stay in shape.

‘Mary, like the rest of her family, is completely committed to exercise. She is always walking, jogging or riding,” her sister-in-law Leanne Donaldson previously said New idea.

‘She also runs after four children – guaranteed to keep everyone in shape!’

BEAUTY & SKIN CARE

Mary’s youthful complexion is partly thanks to beauty guru Henriksen, whom she met almost twenty years ago while pregnant with eldest child Christian, and asked him for skin care advice.

Mr Henriksen has his own brand of skin care products, which he previously told FEMAIL that the Queen is a big fan of.

‘Because of her love affair with some of my products, she invited me to her home. I found her incredibly warm, personable and extremely beautiful. I was captivated by her beautiful smile and stunning sense of style,” he recalls.

Mr. Henriksen focuses on the eyes as the most important part of the face to be treated, as they require ‘special attention’ in any skincare regiment.

“Try to use creams that are proven to moisturize and firm to improve your skin’s elasticity, and always make this the last step of your routine,” he said.

“Nothing does this better than our Banana Bright Eye Creme ($54), which serves to lighten and strengthen natural collagen with added vitamin C—it’s makeup and eye care in one pot!”

The beauty businessman also credited Mary’s healthy, balanced diet for her glowing skin.

“I’m a strong opponent of fast food of any kind – say goodbye to junk and discover colorful vegetables instead,” he recommended.
