Qualcomm, the largest maker of smartphone processors, and the Center have entered into a partnership to create a roadmap for the development of industrial, automotive and telecom electronics, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said here on Thursday.
The Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology said US-based Qualcomm has also agreed to set up 6G labs, in line with the 100 5G labs being set up in the country in collaboration with the Center and state governments set up.
Vaishnaw inaugurated Qualcomm, Inc’s Chennai Design Center, which has been set up at an investment of Rs 177.27 crore.
Located on the famous Old Mahabalipuram Road, popularly known as the Information Technology Corridor, the facility would specialize in wireless connectivity solutions with a focus on innovations that complement Wi-Fi technologies.
“The Qualcomm Design Center will have approximately 1,600 highly talented semiconductor design teams working from this facility. Tamil Nadu is a state of great talent. It has fantastic talent. It has created so many good technologies and the current Qualcomm Design Center is another milestone in Tamil Nadu’s talent journey,” Vaishnaw told reporters after visiting the Design Centre.
About the center, he said, “What is special about this center is that the design of the semiconductors will be done from start to finish. For a long time, a lot of the design was done in India, but here it will be the same.” from start to finish, the final product, that’s what’s so special about today’s program. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision is to create a complete semiconductor value chain in India, starting from design, manufacturing and ATMP (Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging facilities.”
The investment in the Design Center would open new doors for semiconductor design, in line with the ‘Make in India’ campaign, and unlock growth opportunities for a strong indigenous design ecosystem.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for three semiconductor facilities at an investment of Rs 1.25 trillion.
Referring to it, Vaishnaw said that today Prime Minister Modi has created an entire semiconductor value chain, an entire ecosystem. And this is the basis for a developed country. Because semiconductors are the gateway to the automotive industry, electronics, laptops, servers, mobile phones, consumer electronics, everything we use in our lives today, the minister said.
“It is very important to bring this value chain to India. I am so happy with today’s inauguration that every part of the value chain (in semiconductor industry) is being captured and in the next term of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, we will build on this foundation and create a strong industry in our country,” said he.
Earlier, Vaishnaw briefly interacted with Qualcomm, Inc. President and CEO Cristiano Amon. Referring to the meeting, the minister said Qualcomm has agreed to work with the Government of India and state governments to prepare a roadmap for the development of industrial, automotive and telecom electronics.
“We have also agreed that like the 100 5G labs set up in the country, we will set up 6G labs in our country on the same scale so that students get more opportunities for creating 6G solutions,” Vaishnaw said .
“In 5G we have become equal to the world and better than the world. In 6G we will lead the world. That is the basis on which we will work,” he said.
Qualcomm said in a statement that it has launched a program to support 6G University Research in India, in line with the Centre’s Bharat 6G Vision, to promote academic research and leadership in emerging 6G technologies.
