Quad summit to take place in Delaware this month, India could host next year

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to join leaders of the US, Japan and Australia at the Quad summit in the US later this month. The influential group is likely to hold talks on pressing global challenges, including the situation in Ukraine.

According to insiders, the summit is likely to take place on September 21 in Wilmington, the birthplace of US President Joe Biden, Delaware.

There has been no official announcement yet on the date and venue of the high-profile summit. This year, it was Indiaā€™s turn to host the Quad summit. However, the groupā€™s leaders decided to hold the summit at a location that was convenient for everyone, given the constraints of a tight calendar.

Under the new plan, India is expected to host the Quad summit next year.

Modi, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida are among world leaders travelling to the US to attend the UN Summit of the Future in New York on September 22-23.

The Quad summit is likely to focus on strengthening cooperation among member states in the Indo-Pacific region. It will also address several key challenges facing the world, including the conflict in Ukraine.

In July, foreign ministers of the Quad member states held wide-ranging talks in Tokyo, focusing on strengthening overall cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

In a loud and clear message to China, the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting reaffirmed the group’s unwavering commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. It also resolved to work toward a region in which no country dominates another and every state is free from “coercion” in any form.

The foreign ministers also announced a plan to expand the ambitious Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) programme to the Indian Ocean region, to facilitate surveillance of strategic waters.

Prime Minister Modi will also address an event for the Indian community in New York, besides holding talks with several world leaders on the sidelines of the UN summit, the sources cited above said.

According to the UN, the Summit of the Future will bring together leaders from different countries to build a new international consensus on how to ā€œimprove the present and secure the futureā€.

According to the UN, effective global cooperation is increasingly essential for our survival, but this is difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect current political and economic realities.

The Summit of the Future is an opportunity to get back on track, the report says.
