Quad is more strategically aligned and relevant than ever: White House

The upcoming Quad summit in Delaware will demonstrate that the group of four countries is more strategically aligned and relevant than ever before, the White House said on Wednesday.

“We believe you will see from this summit that the Quad is more strategically aligned and more relevant than ever before,” John Kirby, director of strategic communications for the White House National Security Council, told reporters at a news conference.

Kriby made his remarks ahead of US President Joe Biden’s visit to the other three QUAD leaders from Australia, India and Japan in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday.

Kirby said the current Quad Summit will mark the first time the U.S. has hosted foreign leaders in Wilmington, the president’s hometown.

“And he’s very passionate about that, about showcasing a place and a community that shaped so much of the public servant and the leader that he became. It’s also a reflection of his belief that foreign policy, like politics, is also personal,” he said.

Kirby said Biden will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese individually and later in a plenary session.

Kirby said Biden has prioritized investing in rebuilding America’s network of alliances and partnerships in the Indo-Pacific over the past three years.

“Think of AUKUS, for example, or the trilateral Camp David summit with Japan and South Korea or the first-ever summit of US-Japan-Philippines leaders in April,” he said.
