Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a video released in the early hours of Saturday that his forces have reached the strategically important city of Rostov-on-Don.

A serious-looking Putin told the Russians, “We are dealing with treason now.”

The 70-year-old dictator warned: “Anyone who has deliberately chosen the path of betrayal will inevitably be punished.

“The armed forces have received the correct orders.”

He continued: “As the President of Russia and the Supreme Commander, as a citizen of Russia, I am doing everything I can to repel this attack and ensure the freedom and security of our citizens. The mutineers betrayed Russia.’

As Putin spoke, 180 Russian military and security forces at a border crossing in the Voronezh region refused to interfere with the actions of the Wagner PMC and laid down their arms.

Prigozhin responded on Saturday by telling the president he was “wrong” in accusing him of treason.

He added: “Nobody will turn themselves in at the request of the president, the FSB or anyone else.

“Because we don’t want the country to live on in corruption, deceit and bureaucracy.”
