Notorious puppy farm mogul who kept dozens of dogs in horrifying conditions in an underground bunker is found guilty of animal cruelty for the third time

  • Kathryn Lisa King convicted of 17 counts of animal cruelty for a puppy farm
  • The charges relate to an RSPCA inspection of the Bullsbrook property in June 2020.
  • 32 Dogs, Raised For Profit, Found Living In Unsanitary, Overcrowded Conditions
  • If he is banned from having contact with animals, it will be his third ban in 18 years.

A ‘greedy’ puppy breeder faces the prospect of a third ban in 18 years from keeping animals after being convicted again for running a cruel dog breeding operation.

Kathryn Lisa King, 52, was convicted of 17 counts of animal cruelty and now faces a years-long ban on having contact with any animals after a trial at Perth Magistrates Court.

He had faced 26 charges stemming from a raid by Western Australian RSPCA inspectors on a property in Bullsbrook, northeast of Perth, in June 2020.

They found 32 dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, including small metal cages and plastic crates.

Breeds found included Maltese cross Shih Tzus, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, poodles, and cavoodles. Nine were still pups.

RSPCA spokeswoman Hannah Dreaver said it was a case of “greed, pure and simple”.

“This woman was raising a large number of dogs with absolutely no concern for their welfare, health or safety,” Ms Dreaver said.

He claimed that Ms King ran an operation that deliberately prioritized “profit over welfare”.

Ms King treated the dogs like “money machines”, forcing them to have “litter after litter”.

The 26 charges he faced came just two years after a five-year ban on being in charge of or within 10 meters of any animal expired.

That order was made after 50 dogs were found in a crowded underground bunker on a Kellerberrin property following a raid by police, RSPCA inspectors and council rangers.

The dogs were forced to live in a “foreign environment” with poor ventilation and no sunlight.

They included German Shepherds, West Highland Terriers, King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, Labradors, and Tibetan Terriers.

She was fined $20,000.

Before that, he had already been banned from owning an animal for a decade in 2004 for similar acts of cruelty.

King will be sentenced later this year.
