Pubs, clubs and bars to stay open later for the Olympics in NSW

Pubs, clubs and bars will remain open until the early hours of the morning during the Olympics, a major change to the opening hours of one state.

Venues in NSW will be allowed to broadcast their events later than normal, as long as they are showing selected events from the 2024 Olympic Games. This is a new measure from the NSW Government.

The decision will give more Olympic fans the opportunity to cheer on their favourite teams, given the eight-hour time difference between Paris and Sydney.

Minister for Music and Nightlife John Graham said all pubs, clubs and bars in NSW would be eligible for the extended opening hours and would not need to submit an individual application to open when they were broadcasting the Olympic Games live.

“Olympic fever only hits once every four years and as Australians we know that means staying up late and depriving yourself of some sleep to make the most of it,” he said.

“There’s nothing like cheering a gold medal winner home with friends and the community. Special events with expanded commerce will support that – as well as an economic boost and more jobs at night.”

The move will continue after the Olympics, with venues able to keep their doors open longer for “special cultural and sporting events” in a bid to boost the nightlife economy. Gaming and Racing Minister David Harris said he was keen to take advantage of the new opening hours himself.

“The Olympic Games are the greatest spectacle on earth and Australia is one of the most sport-loving countries in the world. It is therefore fitting that the people of New South Wales come together at local venues to cheer on our athletes competing in these great events,” he said.

‘The extended opening hours will allow our pubs, clubs and bars to benefit from the Games, while guests soak up the atmosphere of the Olympic Games.

‘I look forward to cheering on our Olympians together with the public in the coming weeks.’

Visitors are advised to check with their local location for specific opening hours.
