PS5 and Xbox Series X games with 120fps support
>
We are seeing more and more PS5 and Xbox Series X|S games with 120fps support. Between blockbuster hits and charming indie platformers, more titles benefit from 120fps support. As long as you have a compatible display, that’s great news for you.
We’ve been stuck in the doldrums of running games at a syrupy 30fps on last-gen consoles before. But with higher frame rates becoming more readily available, that’s no longer the case. Gamers can enjoy the benefits of reduced input latency, smoother visuals, and significantly more responsive gameplay.
Fortunately, now is an excellent time to pick up a 120Hz-compatible display, thanks to the Cyber Monday deals. Whether that’s one of the best 4K TVs or one of the best gaming monitors, there’s plenty to choose from. They will be an excellent addition to any Cyber Monday PS5 deals or Cyber Monday Xbox Series X deals running until November 28. Stay up to date with the best deals with our Cyber Monday Live Blog.
120fps support was reserved exclusively for PC gamers with powerful enough hardware. However, PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S owners with a 120Hz, HDMI 2.1-compatible display can reach the lofty heights of 4K and 120fps, though it’s usually one or the other on consoles. Those who have 120 Hz, HDMI 2.0 displays can also benefit from 120 fps, but only at 1080p (and sometimes 1440p).
So which PS5 and Xbox Series X games support 120fps? And will the Xbox Series S benefit from that too? We’ve gathered all the games below into an easy-to-read format so you can see which games benefit from higher framerates on both systems. We’ll also be updating this list in the future as more games get 120fps support.
If you want to play games at a blistering 120fps, here’s how to enable 120Hz on PS5 and how to enable 120Hz on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S 120 fps: why is 120 fps better than 60 fps?
Does a higher frame rate really matter? Simply put, yes, but at the moment it is a luxury for many. 120fps support is a huge plus in competitive games, where split-second action can make all the difference. Playing games at a higher frame rate makes games look incredibly smooth, counteracting motion sickness and making games look cleaner overall.
But it is also a graphics intensive feature hence it is not supported by every game. It just wasn’t possible on the last generation of consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One families.
While it’s always hard to fully show the benefits of 120fps without experiencing it for yourself, the video below shows Ori and the Will of the Wisps at 60fps and 120fps. The difference between the two is huge, even though 60fps is still considered the sweet spot for frame rates. Ori seems like it’s more stop-start at 60fps, while at 120fps it’s noticeably smoother in motion
120Hz vs 120fps: What’s the Difference?
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: 120 Hz vs 120 fps – What’s the difference?
It’s easy to confuse the two, but it’s important to know the difference between them. Hertz (Hz) refers to the number of times your screen refreshes per second. Most TVs are limited to 60 Hz, but you may have seen some monitors that support 144 Hz and even 360 Hz. If your TV only has a 60 Hz refresh rate, you will not be able to play at 120 fps, the maximum refresh rate per second is 60. For 120 fps you need a screen that is capable of 120 Hz.
Frames per second (fps) is the number of individual images generated by a console or a PC. Developers often lock the frame rate to a fixed number: 30, 60, or 120, to provide a stable and consistent experience. If you’ve ever played an unlocked game at 30fps, it’s often extremely off-putting, as the game fluctuates wildly between different framerate values. That leads to a choppy, inconsistent experience.
The main takeaway is this: if a screen is capable of 120Hz, then it can play games at 120fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, provided it has an HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 port. Again, an HDMI 2.1 or 2.0 connection will affect what resolutions you can run at if you hit 120fps.
