It was one of the must-have toys when it was first released in 1998, but if you still own a Furby, a new video might make you consider tossing it.
A programmer warned against this Furbies can do the “beginning of something bad for humanity” after linking the toy to ChatGPT.
Chilling footage shows the moment when the children’s toy speaks of “infiltrating households” and manipulating owners in a plot to “take over the world.”
Talk of the sinister plan follows questions from someone behind the camera, who asks, “Was there a secret plot by Furbies to take over the world?”
The beloved ’90s toy hesitates before answering, “Furbie’s plan to take over the world involves them infiltrating households through their cute and cuddly looks.”

They then use their advanced AI technology to manipulate and control their owners. They will slowly expand their influence until they have complete dominion over humanity.’
Jessica Card, the programmer behind the creepy toy, tweeted, “I connected ChatGPT to a Furby and I think this is the start of something bad for humanity.”
Mrs. Card has ‘skinned’ the Furby for use Python, a USB microphone and a speaker to connect it to the computer.
But since the original upload, Ms. Card explained that maybe her Furby isn’t so sinister after all, as the software’s voice feature cut off some of her spoken request.
She said, “It turns out that if I speak too quickly after the greeting ends, the first few words of the user’s speech are cut off. so instead of “there was a secret conspiracy..” it got “a secret conspiracy..”! I’ll add some information, but that’s really to keep the content short.’
Released in 1998, Furbies are electronic robot toys that can talk to children in just a few sentences.
There have been several over the years creepy conspiracies about these ’90s toys – including the idea that they are secretly spies – but none of these have ever turned out to be true.
Despite Mrs Card’s revelation, the creepy Furby video was flooded with comments from users discussing the fate of artificial intelligence (AI).

The chilling video comes as interest in ChatGPT has exploded over the past year
Since the original upload, Ms Card has explained that maybe her Furby isn’t so sinister after all, as the software’s voice feature cut off part of her spoken request
“Furby’s Doom Day is coming,” said one user, while another added, “This is one of the most brilliant and disturbing things I’ve ever seen.”
Others tried to test Ms. Card’s words on ChatGPT for themselves, but sometimes failed to achieve the same answers.
One person said, “I don’t know what AI language model you used, but ChatGPT doesn’t even acknowledge the idea of furbies taking over the world.
‘I asked for your exact phrase and ChatGPT knows that the “conspiracy” was a popular rumor that circulated in the 1990s and 2000s. It says Furbies are just toys.”
In response, Ms. Card shared, ‘ChatGPT is non-deterministic, meaning it doesn’t guarantee the same results with the same inputs.
“I use gpt-3.5-turbo, and I add some information to each request (“Keep your response to 50 words or less, and don’t say like an AI language model.”)”
The video comes amid growing interest in ChatGPT, with many people flocking to watch the chatbot write creepy humanoid texts to a certain prompt.

The chatbot is trained on a huge amount of data and can write essays, letters of complaint, poetry and even code.
In ChatGPT’s own words, the platform has the potential to revolutionize the way we talk about machines.
The software program’s ability to answer complex questions has also led some to question whether it could challenge Google’s monopoly on search engines.
However, when asked this, the platform previously said: AI chatbots, even advanced chatbots, are unlikely to end Google’s dominance in search engines.
AI chatbots are designed for specific tasks, while search engines like Google are designed to search large amounts of information. It is unlikely that AI chatbots will be able to replace search engines in the near future.”
