Jules Bass, the producer behind Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ and Frosty the Snowman, died Tuesday at the age of 84 in an assisted living home in New York.

The talented director, who earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Children’s Special in 1976, died of an age-related illness, according to his publicist Jennifer Fisherman, who confirmed the news to Deadline.

In addition to helping spread the Christmas spirit through his holiday TV specials, including Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town, he wrote several children’s books.

His published works include Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon, Cooking With Herb, and Headhunters, which was adapted into the popular 2011 film Monte Carlo starring Selena Gomez.

After attending New York University and working for an advertising agency, Bass began working with the late Arthur Rankin, with whom he collaborated on such classics as Mad Monster Party and the TV series The New Adventures of Pinocchio.

In 2005, Rankin praised Bass, saying they “complemented each other a bit” because they “each had certain talents” and the other didn’t.

“He had certain talents that I didn’t have, and I had certain talents that he didn’t. I was actually an artist and a creator; he was a creator and a writer and a lyricist,” said the director, who mainly worked in animation, before his death in early 2014.

The pair received a Peabody in 1978 for their animated version of The Hobbit.

Their prolific work on TV includes The Ballad of Smokey the Bear (1966), The Wacky World of Mother Goose (1967), The Little Drummer Boy (1968), as well as the Easter special Here Comes Peter Cottontail (1971), The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974), and more.
