Laura confirmed to Daily Mail Australia on Friday that she had had surgery on her eye due to a pterygium growth, rather than sustaining an injury.
According to Hopkins Drug, a pterygium, “also known as surfer’s eye, is a raised, wedge-shaped growth of the conjunctiva that extends onto the cornea – the outer layer of the eye.” It can affect vision and discomfort in some cases.
Another website states that the term “surfer’s eye” “comes from the idea that surfers work in the same elements that cause pterygium — sun, wind, and dusty conditions.”
She also shared a photo of her cute pooch resting on the couch and said she will be out of the water for four weeks to heal
Laura, who hails from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, is a 2x Junior World Champion, Australian Champion and Pro Jr. Champion.
She previously told Daily Mail Australia what it takes to stay motivated and how surfing led her to find a second passion: the arts.
“Surfing has opened so many doors for me and I’ve been lucky enough to work with so many photographers and creative people around the world,” she said.

“I love being creative and traveling. I’ve documented a few of my travels on my blog and it’s really nice to do that and have a project besides competing.”
She said at the time, “Competing is a rollercoaster of a life.”
“I’ve learned to always challenge myself, even when it’s hard or when you feel like you’re at rock bottom. My ultimate career goal is to win a major event.”
