When looking for the actress to play Priscilla, Coppola tried to find someone who could play her both as a teenager and as a woman in her late twenties. And it turns out that Spaeny was her first choice in adapting the story from the start.
“The character goes from 15 to 27 over the course of the film, so she had to be able to act and age in a long time,” the filmmaker, 51, explained to Fashion.
“Having the same actress play Priscilla at those different stages of her life was really important to me, and I think Cailee can pull it off. She’s such a strong actress and she looks very young too.’
When it came to finding the young man who could play Elvis Presley, Coppola knew it would be hard to find someone who could come close to his incredible good looks and charisma. But in the end, it was Elordi’s own charisma that helped land him the role.
“I thought no one would look like Elvis, but Jacob has the same kind of magnetism. He’s so charismatic and girls go crazy around him, so I knew he could play this kind of romantic icon,” revealed the writer and director of Lost In Translation.
Different periods: Spaeny, left, plays Priscilla as a 15-year-old through her late 20s; and Jacob is well seen in 2022
There is no doubt that Coppola, who also serves as executive producer, A24 and Sony Pictures hope to match or surpass the success of Luhrmann’s Elvis, which grossed $286 million at the worldwide box office on an $85 million budget.
Priscilla Presley, 77, was a strong supporter of the Elvis biopic, calling it “a true story told brilliantly and creatively that only Baz, in his uniquely artistic way, could have delivered.” it. He knew he had big shoes to fill. He was extremely nervous playing this role. I can only imagine.’
Inspired by Priscilla’s life story as a teenager growing up at Graceland in Memphis, Coppola compared her story to that of “Marie Antoinette.”
“The hardest part about writing the script was getting rid of so many incredible details from Priscilla’s memoir,” she said. “I wanted to imagine what growing up in that world must have been like through her eyes.”
So far, there’s no official word on when Priscilla will make the premiere.
