A Princeton professor has sparked a backlash from disgusted Twitter users after calling on his followers to “read and think about” a “thought-provoking” article promoting bestiality.
Ivy League lecturer Dr. Peter Singer, 77, shared a report called “Zoophilia Is Morally Permissible” with his 124,000 followers this week, prompting a flood of shocked responses.
The piece, published in September in the Journal of Controversial Ideas, argues that animals can consent to sex with humans by giving “indications,” and that it may not be harmful to them.
Dr. Singer, a Princeton scholar for more than two decades who founded and edits the journal, described the article as “thought-provoking” when he shared it on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Princeton scholar described the controversial article as “thought-provoking” for more than two decades when he shared it on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“This piece challenges one of society’s strongest taboos and argues for the moral permissibility of some forms of sexual contact between humans and animals,” he said on Wednesday.
‘This article offers a controversial perspective that calls for a serious and open discussion about animal ethics and sex ethics.’

The professor of bioethics soon faced a barrage of criticism from disgusted readers.
‘What’s wrong with you!!’ several people were outraged, while another condemned him for promoting “rape.” Bestiality is a crime in all states except Hawaii, New Mexico, West Virginia and Wyoming.
“There’s nothing to think about,” someone replied to Dr. Singer. ‘People (almost always men) who rape and sexually abuse animals should be in prison and on the sex offenders register. Sex with someone who cannot give consent is rape. Next one!’
Another person pointed out the writings of Dr. Singer on ethics and veganism. ‘I can’t eat them. Can fuck them,” they wrote.
Others described the article as ‘twisted’, ‘sick’ and ‘disgusting’. “F*** off you f***ing psycho pervert!!!,” one person wrote.
“Not every barrier needs to be broken,” another opponent stated. ‘Not every standard needs to be questioned.’
Another American academic, Professor Gary Francione, denounced Dr. Singer as someone who has supported bestiality for decades, accusing him of parroting the controversial line for publicity.
“Peter, you’ve been arguing for decades that we need to rethink bestiality. Here is your 2001 essay, which originally appeared in Nerve,” said the NJ Rutgers University lecturer.
‘I thought it was sick at the time. I think it’s sick now. But I appreciate that whatever keeps you in the public eye works.”

But Dr. Singer doubled down on his support for the article on Saturday, explaining why he is vegan but also apparently pro-bestiality.
“Imagine being an animal locked up all your life in a stable on a factory farm that’s too narrow for you to even turn around, let alone take a step, so you have nothing else to do all day.” do then get up and lie down. a floor consisting of bare metal slats,” he said.
‘Then you are stuffed into a truck and driven for hours to a place where you are slaughtered.
“This is what is happening to millions of pigs in the US today, and the lives of billions of other animals in factory farms are no better.
‘Now imagine that you are an animal living with a person who cares for you and loves you in the same way that most people love their animal companions, but in addition, this person sometimes has sexual contact with you, and ensures that the contact actually takes place. not hurt you, and give you the freedom to leave if you don’t like it.
‘This is how you live your natural life, and when you become old and terminally ill and in need, the person who cares for you, full of sorrow, gently takes you to a veterinarian who puts you to sleep. Which animal would you rather be?’
