The Princess of Wales is beating the hopes of a generation of photographers by taking her own photos of the royal children rather than letting someone else “make a name for themselves,” said one royal photographer.
Kate, 40, has published photos over the years to mark important occasions such as the birthdays of her three children.
But royal photographer John Swannell said she is denying others the chance to make a name for themselves.
“All the work I’ve gotten with the royals has really elevated my career; nowadays someone like me just won’t have the chance,” he said.
“Young English photographers should be given those opportunities.”

Mr Swannell said there were some benefits to the princess taking the photos herself.
He added: “In some ways Kate is probably right to do it herself. She’s not a great photographer, but she just flips, and with kids it’s easier when you know them.’
The princess’s passion for photography dates back to before she joined The Firm, after completing her graduate thesis on photographing children.
She became the first member of the royal family to take the first official photos of a royal baby in 2015, when she released her snapshots of newborn Charlotte in the arms of her big brother Prince George.

The photo was taken during a family trip to the beach in July, after George and his siblings split from school for the summer.
In 2020, a photo was released of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis as they stepped on their radiant father, Prince William.
The photo was published on the occasion of Father’s Day and William’s 38th birthday.
It was shared alongside another photo of William hugging then-two-year-old Louis on his knee as Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince George, six, flared around them. The swing they sat on had meaning for Father’s Day, as it was a wedding present from Prince Charles.
Kate, an avid photographer, took the photos on the grounds of their Norfolk mansion, Anmer Hall.

She has also released footage of her children playing in Norfolk on the beaches and among bluebells.
Other photos of the three children were taken before their first day of kindergarten.
Photos were also released in 2020 of Princess Charlotte volunteering during the pandemic. She helped pack and deliver food parcels for isolated retirees living near the Sandringham Estate.
Royal expert Camilla Tominey previously said the then Duchess of Cambridge “has taken ownership of the public image of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.”
Ms Tominey said the model is “unique” to the couple and helps the family maintain a level of privacy for their three children.
Speak with The Telegraph last year she said: ‘The paparazzi – there is no market anymore because the Duchess comes out with her own family photos and they are much more valuable to the press than long-lens photos.
“That’s how The Cambridges are going to take stock, they’re going to give to get some privacy back.”

“His generation is the digital generation and the challenges for the Cambridges over time are how to manage the public interest in their son with their own privacy.”

“She has a natural ability to capture humanity with a great eye for composition and color.”

“I think she’s definitely improved since her first photos of George and Charlotte, she’s now experimenting with different light by going outside into the garden.”

Royal fans often wait in trepidation for the photos, which usually show their subjects looking natural and relaxed.
Ms Sharpe said the real strength of her recent work lies in the way she “captures joy and real moments in the expressions of her subjects.”
“Kate has an amazing ability to frame and capture unstaged moments. She has an intuitive eye for color, composition and light, often placing her subjects in soft light,” she explains.

Kate has displayed an artistic flair since her teens, having studied art history at the University of St Andrews, where she met Prince William. She wrote her graduate thesis on the era of photography, especially pictures of children.
