England will be cheered on by the Princess of Wales on Saturday during the Rugby League World Cup quarter-final against Papua New Guinea.

Kate will sit in the stands at Wigan’s DW Stadium, where the men’s last eight match follows the English women’s group match against Canada.

It will be her first time at a match since she took over from Prince Harry as patron of the Rugby Football League in February.

Harry was stripped of his royal patronage last year after announcing that he would no longer be a working member of the royal family.

RFL Chairman Simon Johnson said: ‘We will be delighted and honored to welcome the Princess of Wales as the Royal Patron of the RFL for the first time.

“With both our England women’s and men’s teams playing important World Cup games on Saturday, her presence will be a special occasion for our sport, for the World Cup and for the famous rugby league city of Wigan.”

Shaun Wane’s England are favorites to advance beyond Papua New Guinea, which they also defeated in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup in 2017. The winners meet Tonga of Samoa in the semi-finals at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium at 12 November.
