Princess of Wales surprises royal fans with dark red nail polish on Easter Sunday

The Princess of Wales added an unusual pop of color to her fingertips as she attended the Easter Mattins in Windsor today.

The mother of three had her nails painted a dark red – as opposed to the neutral or bright shades she typically wears for public appearances with the royal family.

It is widely believed that there were rules around colored nails during the late Queen’s reign, which ended last September, with nude nail polish colors being preferred.

William Hanson, an expert in royal etiquette, shared The sun that ‘hot red and bright pink, for example, are not correct, certainly not on official occasions and especially during mourning’.

Allowed colors, he said, included “translucent or dusty pink.”

Kate was spotted sporting the brightly colored nails as she attended an Easter Sunday service with the royal family at St George’s Chapel this morning.

She was accompanied by Prince William and the couple’s three children, while four-year-old Prince Louis attended the traditional service for the first time.

The family all dressed in blue, Kate once again wore a long Catherine Walker coat paired with a bespoke £825 pillbox hat, matching handbag and nude pointed heels.

Her red nails added another splash of color to the spring ensemble, and royal onlookers were a big fan of her decision.

One Twitter user said: ‘Royals in blue at Easter services today in Windsor. And more color than usual on Kate’s nails.’

Another said, ‘Do you see what I see? Look at the princess’s fingernails…surprising.”

A third said, “I like Catherine’s dark nail polish.”

Kate has been spotted sporting painted toenails in open-toed shoes before, but colorful fingernails are rare among members of the royal family.

Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle caused a stir in 2018 when she attended the British Fashion Awards with dark colored nails.

Experts at the time claimed this broke the Queen’s long-standing rule about colored nails, which the late monarch would have found “vulgar.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were unsurprisingly absent from today’s meeting at St George’s Chapel.

Those in attendance included the Wales family, the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and Zara and Mike Tindall – who were accompanied by their daughters.

The King and Queen Consort – also in royal blue – led the party in Windsor. Behind them were his brother and sister, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne.

Next in line were the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and their eldest son, James, now the Earl of Wessex. Their student daughter Lady Louise was absent.

Also present at the party was Princess Anne’s husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, who walked with Queen Elizabeth’s niece, Lady Sarah Chatto, and her husband Daniel.

They were followed by a heavily pregnant Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, who are expecting their second child together.

Today will undoubtedly be a bittersweet moment for the royal family as they celebrate another family celebration without the Queen.
