Today it was revealed that the Princess of Wales is a fan of night swimming in cold water – and plays ‘beer pong’ with Mike Tindall.
The royal sporting revelations came to light today with the release of a special Rugby World Cup edition of the former England international’s podcast: The Good, the Bad and the Rugby.
In the 50-minute episode, the Prince and Princess of Wales and Anne, the Princess Royal – patrons of Welsh, English and Scottish rugby respectively – talk to Tindall, the husband of Anne’s daughter Zara, and co-presenters James Haskell and Alex Payne in the green drawing room of Windsor Castle.
The recording, which was filmed on Wednesday, reveals some of the royal family’s sporting secrets.

Presenter Tindall appears to show a more playful side of the Princess of Wales as he reveals her competitive nature. He tells his viewers, “I saw her play beer pong!”

Princess of Wales recreates Diana sports day in bare feet
The Princess of Wales reveals she was forced to run barefoot in a parent race on Sports Day, which many people will think is reminiscent of Diana’s famous sprint at William’s Sports Day in 1989.
Kate said: ‘There are many schools that have banned parent breeds because they have become far too competitive.’
When asked if she wanted to participate, she replied, “We did!”
The princess added: “We were categorically told that there was no parent race. But then they called a parent race at the last minute, and me with the competitive side, we were both like… we have to participate.”
She giggles and says, “So I had to do it barefoot.”
William said: ‘I came second. I just started running, joining in and looking around. “I was quite far in front and there was an Italian dad in the front and I thought I had to overtake him.”
Kate: ‘And I ran barefoot in the same race.’
Princess Anne continued with a memory of family races around Balmoral Square.
She says: ‘Running across the square at Balmoral – I was very good at that because I could make turns very well.’
Kate ‘cold water swimming fan’
Kate revealed: ‘I really love all sports. Personally, I like to swim whenever I can.
‘Cold swimming: the colder the better. I absolutely love it. Something to the point where William (says), ‘You’re crazy’ and it’s dark and it’s raining.
‘I’ll go find some cold water. I love it.’

Anne about pushy parents
‘My worst was gymkhanas, when I took Peter to gymkhanas. Ah, the pain. That was sprinting,” she told Tindall.
‘It was also downright hysterical. I tried to get him to do things in more or less the right order.
Princess Anne joined the conversation with her son-in-law, former England international Mike Tindall.
‘The other parents? I mean, we were lying at the end of the course crying with laughter at the behavior of some of the other parents.
‘One of them knocked his child (the pony) off and literally threw him across the finish line.’
William and Kate the ‘Monica and Chandler’ of the family
English legend Haskell asks Kate and William if they are like ‘Monica and Chandler’ from the ’90s sitcom Friends as he discusses their competitive rivalry.
Kate jokes unconvincingly: ‘I’m really not that competitive. I don’t know where this comes from’.
She then admits: ‘I don’t think the two of us managed to finish a game of tennis. It will be a mental challenge between the two of us.”
William says: ‘It’s about who can surpass each other (mentally).’

When Tindall asks if this match can be seen between their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, Anne says: “Just a little bit, I would say.”
Kate said: ‘They all have very different temperaments and try all kinds of different sports,’ adding that they were ‘obviously very young’.
Tindall says of Zara: ‘I would say my wife and I are so competitive about everything. She would always want to beat me. She always talks about her sprint career – obstacles.”
Anne added: ‘Yes, she was really good.’
Anne’s driving skills
Tindall uses the podcast to earn some points with his mother-in-law when her motorcycle skills come up.
Anne asks her interviewers: ‘Does Formula 1 fall under your umbrella of different sports? I’ve driven one. I did three circuits of the club circuit at Silverstone. And my only claim to fame was that I didn’t procrastinate.’
Tindall praises her and says, “A very good driver, actually.”
Anne, excited, replies, “Ooh!”
He added: ‘You are a very good driver. That also applies to your daughter.’
William jokes, “What are you looking for?”
Mike says, ‘Nothing, no! But you’ve always loved driving…’
Anne says: ‘We did go-karts, don’t forget that.’
