Princess Michael of Kent refuses to eat a single bite as she judges World Chelsea Bun competition – instead picking her favourites just on appearance

Princess Michael of Kent refused to try a Chelsea bun during the World Chelsea Bun Awards judging.

The royal family, 78, married to Prince Michael of Kent, a first cousin of the late Queen, stepped in to help with the ceremonies at Partridges, which delivers messages to the royal family.

Princess Michael’s daughter-in-law, Lady Sophie Windsor, was supposed to judge the awards, but ran into a diary conflict and asked her mother-in-law to intervene. Channel 5’s The Royal Borough: Kensington & Chelsea will be featured.

But the royal threads seemed to be crossed, with Princess Michael unaware that she would have to eat something while judging a baking competition.

“My daughter-in-law, when she said, ‘Help me with this amazing children’s charity,’ didn’t tell me I was going to have a taste. Because I’m not going to taste,’ she said.

She then decided to judge the sandwiches by sight alone, before seeing how the other judges had a lot to eat.

“I assumed the judges had to take a really good bite of each sandwich,” she added.

“I have to say they look gorgeous, my expert eye goes straight to the main thing, they are gorgeous,” she continued.

She noted that the pomegranate rolls were “appealing” and the savory rolls “very interesting.”

“It’s so big, it’s almost a meal,” she added over another sandwich, before noticing it was “very, very hard to judge.”

Partridges is a family-run St James’ grocery store that became a favorite of the Queen.
