Princess Mary’s bridesmaid Amber Petty looks regal at the Australian Open – just hours before her best friend becomes Queen of Denmark

Princess Mary’s maid of honor Amber Petty stepped out in royal purple at the Australian Open on Sunday, hours before her best friend was set to become Queen of Denmark.

Petty, who was at Princess Mary’s side on her wedding day, looked casual in a figure-hugging dress that consisted of a camisole top with spaghetti straps that flowed into a skirt with leaf-like appliqués.

She accessorized her look with a choker with a voluminous flower in mauve and dainty pearl earrings.

Amber wore her golden locks back and away from her face for the occasion and highlighted her features with a simple makeup palette.

It comes at a time when tens of thousands of people are expected to brave Copenhagen’s forecast temperature of 3 degrees Celsius to catch a glimpse of Mary Donaldson as she becomes Queen of Denmark.

Events are planned in Australia Sydney‘s Slip Inn where the two first met, and in Mary’s home state Tasmaniawhere landmarks will be illuminated in recognition of the popular royal family.

The Danish royal succession will be a low-key affair, with the main event taking place around 1am (AEDT), when most Australians will be asleep.

Here, Frederick becomes Denmark’s head of state, Mary becomes queen and their eldest son, 18-year-old Christian, becomes the crown prince.

King Frederik, 55, will make his first public appearance on a balcony next to the Danish prime minister, who will formally declare him the country’s new regent.

The royal couple will ride home to their residence at Amalienborg Palace in a black-lacquered mahogany carriage from 1891, while military personnel across the harbor will fire cannons in an honorary three-by-27-gun salute.

There will be more festive explosions later when Copenhagen’s famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park hosts a fireworks display – the largest in its 180-year history.

Frederik and Mary married in May 2004 and have four children.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said Australians were proud the country would have its own queen.

“Princess Mary is someone who has long captured the hearts of people around the world,” he said.
