A 30-year-old woman is fighting for her life after falling out of a car driving on a major Australian highway.

The woman was in the front passenger seat of a Honda sedan traveling at 100km/h on the Princess Freeway in Littler River, Victoria on Sunday.

Police were told the woman “got out” of the speeding car and fell onto the road at around 11:30 am.

The woman was airlifted over 50km to Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with life-threatening injuries after sustaining severe head injuries from the fall.

Doctors placed the woman in an induced coma where she remains in critical condition.

The 28-year-old driver stopped about 50 meters from the road where the woman fell.

Police spoke to the male driver and in a bizarre twist arrested him at the scene on unrelated charges.

Police are understood to have been looking for the Tarneit man on an outstanding warrant.

The exact circumstances of the incident have yet to be determined as no other vehicle was involved.

An investigation is still ongoing.

The incident caused major delays on the route between Melbourne and Geelong, paralyzing traffic and diverting motorists from the Princess Freeway.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the accident or the vehicle allegedly driving erratically prior to the incident to contact the police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
