Princess Diana would have been ‘broken-hearted’ over Prince William and Prince Harry’s feud, RICHARD KAY tells PALACE CONFIDENTIAL
The late Princess Diana was said to have been “heartbroken” over the feud between Prince William and Prince Harry, a royal expert has said.
Richard Kay, editor-in-chief of the Daily Mail, told the weekly Mail+ chat show that if Diana had still been alive, the “feud” between her two sons would not have happened.
Tensions between the princes have been rising since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave up their roles as senior working members of the royal family in January 2020, before moving to America in June of that year at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kay, who was a very close friend of Princess Diana and spoke to her up to six times a day, said Harry and William had argued about her “legacy”.
He told Palace Confidential: ‘[They’ve] They’ve had a fight over Diana’s inheritance, they’ve torn Diana’s inheritance apart, [and picking] which part suits them best. I think it is a great tragedy.

‘What I knew about Diana was first and foremost her love for her sons, that was clear to the whole world, she loved those boys. I think she would have been heartbroken.
“The big question is, would it still have happened if Diana had still been with us? My own view is that it probably wouldn’t have happened, because she would have remained the central figure in both their lives and prevented the consequences.”
Harry and William’s relationship has been somewhat volatile in recent years, with the Prince of Wales missing his younger brother during his busy trip to the UK in May.
In his memoir, Spare, Harry even called William his “arch-enemy” and said the pair had always been “competitors,” detailing alleged physical confrontations between the two.
It is believed that the trigger for William and Harry’s rift was when the then-Duke of Cambridge advised his younger brother to “take it slow” when he first started dating Meghan Markle in 2017.
Relations deteriorated further following Megxit, with a source previously telling People that the brothers’ relationship has “changed forever” and that they “will never go back to how they were.” “Harry is looking straight ahead to his future with his family,” they added.
Kay said he believed Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, would have been “proud” of William and Kate for taking their place as Prince and Princess of Wales.
“I think she would have been proud of William and Catherine and what a stylish addition they have made and how they have seamlessly followed in her and Charles’ footsteps with a young family,” he added.

But the royal expert also said Diana would have been “hugely jealous” that Prince Harry was able to “break away” from The Firm.
“You have to remember that Diana was a radical woman, she was very unhappy, she was trapped in the royal system, she tried to get out of it but she couldn’t until her death,” Kay said.
‘I think she would have been incredibly proud of the fact that Harry chose a life outside the royal circle.’
Kay and host Jo Elvin also spoke about Harry’s controversial acceptance of the Pat Tillman Award last month.
He was an iconic NFL player who gave up his lucrative career to join the Army after 9/11. He was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.
Tillman’s own mother Mary told DailyMail.com she was “shocked” that the ESPYs would select “such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award,” adding that she was not consulted about the decision.
“There are recipients that are much more appropriate. There are people who work in the veteran community who are doing wonderful things to help veterans,” she said.
“These people don’t have the money, the resources, the connections or the privileges that Prince Harry has. I think these people need to be recognised.”

During his speech, Prince Harry said: “[Mary’s] Advocating for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and something I respect. The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest of losses.’
Kay said the Duke of Sussex spoke about his relationship with his mother and the bond they had.
‘It “It was clearly a reference to Princess Diana and the fact that he would lose her at such a young age,” he said.
‘I think it was also a subtle way to reach out to Pat Tillman’s mother, who has publicly expressed her strong opinion that Prince Harry was not the right person to receive the award.
“I think he was trying to improve the bridges in that way, but a lot of people weren’t impressed by that.”
