A young man has died in a horrific two-car crash despite desperate efforts by police and paramedics to revive him at the scene.

New South Wales Police found the crash on Princes Highway near Hart Street in Tempe, in Sydney’s Inner West, at around 11:25pm on Friday night.

The 20-year-old man, who was driving a black Mazda 3, received first aid from patrol officers before paramedics arrived.

Despite their efforts to resuscitate him, the man died at the scene.

Patrol officers came across the two-car wreck near Hart Street in Tempe, in Sydney's Inner West, at around 11:25pm on Friday night.

He has not yet been formally identified, but is believed to be in his 20s.

The driver of a Toyota Yaris, a 54-year-old man, was taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in serious but stable condition for mandatory tests.

It is understood that the Mazda 3 was traveling northbound and the Yaris was driving south, and the accident occurred in the southbound lanes.

A police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia on Friday morning that the 54-year-old remains in hospital and has not yet been interviewed.

A crime scene has been established with specialized forensic police to determine the cause of the accident.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner.
