Prince William plans ‘coronation other than King Charles’ with controversial ‘tribute to the people’ tradition to be scrapped
- The Prince of Wales looks for ways to ‘evolve’ the ancient tableware
Prince William would plan a “different coronation than King Charles”, while he wants to modernize the ceremony by removing the “tribute to the people”.
The Prince of Wales will scrap the historic pledge after the Archbishop of Canterbury was met with disapproval for calling on the public to swear allegiance to the king.
Following the negative backlash, the oath was changed to a break from tradition to instead invite those who wish to “invite” their support to the king to do so.
After his father’s coronation, a source close to Prince William told The Times: “There is no way he will go down that road or anything like that.”
The heir to the throne would consider ways to “evolve” the ancient service to keep it “modern” and “relevant.”

A royal source told The Times: “He’s really thinking about how we can make his coronation most relevant in the future?
“He is aware of the fact that in 20 years, or when his time comes, how can the coronation be modern, but also unifying for the nation and the Commonwealth? I think his coronation will look and feel very different.”
The source added Prince William “reflecting” on last week’s events and working to ensure the ceremony “becomes relevant.”
In an effort to bring his family to a modern audience, Kensington Palace released behind-the-scenes video of the Prince and Princess of Wales at the King’s coronation last week.
A video released by Wales’ official YouTube account gives a rare glimpse into their family life over the packed coronation weekend.
The film captures the lavish atmosphere of the party, as it shows William and Kate meeting crowds of royal fans on the Mall outside Buckingham Palace on the night before the coronation.
